KIND Leverages the Salsify GDSN Data Pool To Achieve Success With Kroger

The popular snack brand keeps content updated on the digital shelf with Salsify.

    About KIND

KIND is a snack brand offering bars made from real, nutrient-dense ingredients like nuts, seeds, whole grains, and fruit. Founded in 2004, KIND has grown into a beloved brand dedicated to creating healthy, delicious snacks and promoting kindness and community.

Manual Processes Lead to Outdated Product Information

When Kroger decides to sell an item, it pulls the necessary supplier-submitted information from the Global Data Synchronization Network (GDSN) into its own systems.

However, brands find submitting information to the GDSN challenging.

“A lot of the fields in GDSN are hard to understand,” says Danielle Mytrohovich, product experience manager at KIND. “It wasn’t clear how the information we entered would appear to shoppers on the product detail page [PDP].”

This meant that the KIND team needed to review Kroger’s site SKU by SKU to ensure their data appeared to shoppers as intended. Sometimes, Kroger wouldn’t pull the information until weeks after KIND’s initial submission, rendering the data on-site outdated.

“Also, the whole system is very particular,” Mytrohovich says. “One of our team members accidentally entered a comma in the ‘weight’ attribute, and the entire data set failed to load. She had to comb through every attribute for each product to find the error. It took so much time for us to figure out what data was causing a failure.”

These challenges brought a silver lining, however. The KIND team learned how each GDSN attribute appears on Kroger.com. This allowed them to think through “the lens of the customer” and ensure that the information they submitted was optimized for a great shopper experience.

They decided to invest in a data management system to maximize the product experience on every PDP and improve their processes.

“With Salsify’s PIM, all of our teams have access to the same set of information, and we’re all on the same page.”

KIND Gains Process Efficiencies With Salsify Product Information Management (PIM), Product Content Syndication, and GDSN Data Pool

The KIND team searched for a data management solution that would support Kroger’s GDSN process, as well as its content distribution needs with other retailers.

Salsify proved to be the best choice given its product content syndication capabilities and GS1-certified GDSN Data Pool module. But its main differentiator was its integration of these capabilities with a best-in-class PIM solution.

With Salsify, not only can KIND automate product content submissions instead of using spreadsheets or manual entry, but its data is also always up to date since it’s sourced from its system of record for product information.

“Besides our challenges with GDSN, we had a content centralization issue. Product information lived everywhere — on people’s desktops, different systems, different drives. With Salsify’s PIM, all of our teams have access to the same set of information, and we’re all on the same page,” Mytrohovich says.

“Any updates to the data happen automatically since the GDSN channel in Salsify is connected directly to our PIM, in one platform. No matter when Kroger pulls the data, we know they’re getting the most updated information,” she adds.

Error Resolution and Product Syndication Are Game Changers

The KIND team has also experienced improvements in error resolution.

“The way that Salsify ensures content accuracy before we submit to the GDSN is a game changer,” Mytrohovich says. “That comma typo I mentioned earlier is no longer an issue because Salsify will identify the error and exactly where the error is without us having to manually find it.”

KIND also leverages Salsify for product content syndication to important retailers like Walmart and Target, as well as Salsify Enhanced Content to manage below-the-fold content, Salsify Workflow to drive automation, and an integration from Salsify to Acquia to support its digital commerce team’s workstreams.

“In the decision-making process, it was important for us to find a solution we could grow into and that would support multiple use cases, including syndication to various retailers, our D2C [direct-to-consumer] business, and more,” Mytrohovich says. “We found that other solutions were hard to work with. Salsify is user-friendly, customizable to our needs, and has great support documentation to help us ramp up new users.”

    KIND Experiences Business Success

KIND has experienced significant improvement on the digital shelf since implementing Salsify, including a 10% sales lift on Kroger. They’ve also seen average compliance for bullet point product data increase from 17% to 96% and average image compliance from 57% to 90%.

“These increases are huge for our team,” Mytrohovich says. “We utilize Salsify’s Brand Compliance reports to audit our product detail pages in a more automated way, and we can take quick action when content needs updating.”

“Without Salsify, we would still be where we were three years ago, with varying degrees of content quality on each retailer’s site. Our leadership looks at our PDPs to see how the brand is showing up, so it's imperative that we keep our information accurate and up to date,” she adds.

Salsify has also helped to make connections between KIND’s internal teams. “We’ve gotten so many compliments from our internal teams about how much easier we’ve made their lives. Now that we’ve built that trust, we can start having more conversations about what other efficiencies we can implement using Salsify. The possibilities are endless.”
