Propper International manufactures clothing and gear for tactical, law enforcement, public safety, and military applications. Since 1967, it has been one of the leading uniform suppliers of the U.S. military.
Manual Spreadsheets and No Centralized Product Content Slow Down Time to Market
The Propper International team sells its public safety apparel to consumers through a network of retailers — some of which are relatively small.
To receive product content, these smaller retailers require spreadsheets to be filled out and submitted via email or a portal. As a result, the Propper International team spent days manually collecting and compiling the product data each retailer required.
“Without a central place to manage content, people were doing a lot of one-off work,” says Joe Ruggeri, chief marketing officer (CMO) of Propper International. “Someone would make a great catalog one year and might leave the company, and we’d have to redo the whole catalog the following year because the data didn’t live in one system.”
“If a country of origin changed on a product, we’d have to ask ourselves, ‘OK, now where is that information, and where does it need to be updated?’ And you’d have to go and search through systems and documents one by one. It took a lot of time,” Ruggeri says.
This manual process of collecting information and then entering it into spreadsheets for submission took the team weeks, leading to potential missed sales.

Salsify Becomes Propper International’s Platform for Product Data Management and More
When Propper International began its search for a product data management solution, it needed a two-fold solution to keep its marketing content organized and help automate the delivery of spreadsheets to retailers.
The capabilities of the unified Salsify Product Information Management (PIM) and Syndication solutions helped them achieve both.
“With all of our data now in one place, it's easy to get content ready for a retailer, then simply export the Excel and send it over,” Ruggeri says. “Salsify’s readiness reports help us make sure that our data is compliant with retailer requirements before we submit.
Now, the Propper International marketing team has one place to go when they need to access product information. When changes are made to attributes, they’re automatically applied across products to ensure consistency and accuracy. The team can work off the same data set — without having to do one-off work that can’t be traced or shared with other teams — reducing duplicate work.
The Propper International team also leverages the Salsify Catalog Sites module.
“We love using Catalog Sites to create custom experiences for our customers,” Ruggeri says. “When we visit a military customer versus a police department customer, the content has to resonate. We use catalogs to pull the right products and images to tell the story we want to tell. We’ve also used Catalog Sites to create a resource that our service team can access for quick answers to customers’ questions. We’ve even used catalogs to inform our AI [artificial intelligence] chatbot so that shoppers can get quick answers to their questions.”

Decreased Time to Market — and the New Ability To Navigate and Meet Changing Retailer Requirements
Since implementing Salsify, the Propper International team has reduced their spreadsheet submission turnaround time from several weeks to 24–48 hours.
With the Salsify PIM solution being a central source of truth for the marketing teams, their data is also more accurate and complete. When the team is asked to make data updates, they can now do so at scale — sending updates to all channels at once instead of making manual updates retailer-by-retailer.
The team has also been better able to keep up with changing retailer requirements, especially recent changes that have specifically affected the public safety space.
“The requirements in our space have changed significantly in the last three to five years,” Ruggeri says. “For example, we can no longer use the word ‘tactical’ for our gun belts sold at Walmart. When Walmart implemented this content policy, we had to update 9,000 SKUs right away or face a massive suppression on our listings. With Salsify, we could quickly go through all of our product records, identify every product with the word ‘tactical’ in the description, and make automatic replacements as needed. We met Walmart’s policy change pretty quickly and didn’t experience a loss of sales, which wouldn’t have been the case if we’d had to make those updates manually.”
Ruggeri also highlights the importance of Salsify allowing his team more ownership over how their content shows up in front of shoppers.
