    Wahl Clipper Implements Product Information Management (PIM) on a Global Scale To Drive Data Consistency

    The popular manufacturer of home and personal grooming products enabled efficiency across 19 global teams.

    About Wahl Clipper

    Wahl Clipper’s mission is to design, manufacture, and market high-quality electromechanical hair clipping and personal care products as a world leader in the professional, consumer, and animal markets.

    Independent Systems Across Geographies Lead To Duplicate Work

    When Wahl Clipper first implemented Salsify in 2017, each division created a unique instance within the platform to manage its product information and processes.

    This setup worked well until 2021 when the company performed a systems review and discovered data inconsistencies and duplicate work across the enterprise.

    Because each division managed its content separately, the teams were operating with different depths of knowledge of the platform and there was duplicate, inconsistent data across the instances. Overall ownership of SKU data was also unclear since many teams sold the same product but in different geographies.

    Without clear data owners, what was communicated to retailers depended on which team submitted the information. This led to an inconsistent digital shelf presence, as well as internal duplicate work as teams created and updated data differently for the same products.

    “This isn’t to say that having separate instances couldn’t be a great option for an enterprise,” said Karissa Huseman, digital marketing manager, consumer division at Wahl Clipper.

    “But because we were all supposed to be working from the same baseline information for our thousands of SKUs, having different instances meant that each team had essentially created their own baseline,” Huseman says.

    “That was leading to inconsistent data on the digital shelf. It also meant that when one team updated information — like a product description change, for example — the other teams didn’t have visibility into it and had to spend time chasing that information down or didn’t make the change in their data set at all,” she adds.

    The Wahl leadership team determined they would create a single, global instance of Salsify for the entire Wahl Clipper enterprise. The project aimed to streamline operations, consolidate services, and increase content/catalog visibility across 19 global teams, ultimately making Salsify the source-of-truth product information management (PIM) solution for the entire organization.

    “This isn’t to say that having separate instances couldn’t be a great option for an enterprise, but because we were all supposed to be working from the same baseline information for our thousands of SKUs, having different instances meant that each team had essentially created their own baseline. Salsify Unifies Wahl Clipper’s Global Teams on a Single PIM Instance

    Wahl Clipper took several steps to unify its teams and their processes.

    The company implemented a structured data workflow, establishing an official protocol for data handling. This workflow outlined clear steps from data creation to maintenance, ensuring consistency and accuracy throughout the process.

    To further enhance accountability, they created data ownership assignments. These assignments clarified responsibilities and accountabilities within the team, ensuring each member had a clearly defined role in the project's success. This approach helped streamline communication and task ownership.

    Drive Collaboration and Improve Data Organization With the Right Tools

    Wahl utilized various Salsify features to bring these new processes to life, including:

    • Workflows to drive collaboration;
    • Catalogs to support sales teams;
    • Enhanced Content to syndicate below-the-fold information to critical retailer destinations;
    • User groups and roles to properly drive accountability; and
    • Properties, property groups, validations, taxonomy, policies, permissions, relations, and governance to create an organized data structure within the PIM.

    From a project management standpoint, the team had to ensure a comprehensive onboarding process to create a consistent depth of knowledge about Salsify, while working around conflicting time zones and schedules.

    They mapped out a project flow that provided a visual representation of tasks, dependencies, and timelines. This facilitated better coordination and understanding among team members, promoting efficient project execution.

    Leverage Flexible Configurations To Adapt To Regional Needs

    Because each team had unique specifications and compliance standards based on their geographical location, Wahl took a meticulous approach to customization and localization and leveraged Salsify’s flexible configurations to adapt to the specific needs of each region.

    “This approach ensured that the system was not only globally accessible but also functional and user-friendly for teams with varying technological capabilities and language preferences,” Huseman says.

    Time and Cost Savings Improve

    Implementing these new features and processes allowed Wahl to create a single source of truth for product information in Salsify PIM, reducing duplicative work and creating a consistent brand presence on the digital shelf, all while ensuring that the diverse requirements of each global team were met.

    The streamlined processes and centralized system significantly reduced the time required for data handling, allowing teams to focus on more strategic initiatives. This resulted in fewer emails and meetings spent discussing data access and quality.

    The team also experienced significant time-savings when it came to managing sales team email communications. Wahl’s sales teams can now directly access product information to create digital catalogs and communicate product information to retailers without requesting product information via email from the ecommerce, engineering, graphics, and product teams.

    “We’ve just seen a huge time reduction in being able to empower that team to be self-serving instead of chasing down information from other departments,” Huseman says.

    Enhanced Content Increases Efficiency and Drives Performance

    Additionally, the team found that the Salsify Enhanced Content module saved them both time and money. A previous vendor charged per SKU and per retailer for enhanced content syndication, which added up very quickly.

    Rich media information is now maintained in one platform, with no limit on how many SKUs can be syndicated to the digital shelf. Crucially, having the Salsify Enhanced Content module integrated with the PIM means that any product updates only need to be made once in one system.

    This increased efficiency has made it easier for Wahl to reach their long-tail retailers and increase incremental performance on their SKUs.
    “We can now update more content, across more SKUs, across more retailers. Seeing our EC process become so streamlined and effective has been a huge win,” Huseman says.

    As a next step, the team hopes to integrate more of their back-end systems with Salsify and to continue rolling Salsify out to more global teams.

    “Salsify has made it so easy for us to create a source of truth while respecting each region’s unique needs. We are able to work more efficiently both with and across our geographies, and have drastically cut down on duplicate manual work. Our teams are spending more time on strategic initiatives, and that's helped our business overall,” Huseman says.
